10 GDER students awarded QEII Graduate Scholarship Ten students from the U of C, Faculty of Education, Graduate Division of Educational Research (GDER) received the 2008 Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship, worth up to $15,000. Among these are a surfer researching intercultural and environmental education, an online graduate student studying the characteristics and perceptions of other online graduate students, and a Hispanics language scholar researching how ESL programs are marketed. Whispering Signs
 U of C Faculty of Education doctoral student Polly Knowlton Cockett is project manager for the Whispering Signs initiative – a system of 34 artistic interpretive signs providing onlookers with a "unique and deeply personal" understanding of the Centennial Nature ground and Whispering Woods Natural Area Park prairie grassland. GDER student wins a national master’s thesis award, and presents paper at CIESC conference Ana-Marija Petrunic, who graduated from the Graduate Division of Educational Research in June 2007 with an MA, was recently awarded the Michel Laferriere Award from the Comparative and International Education Society of Canada (CIESC). Highest U of C honour awarded to GDER student
The highest honour a graduating student can receive is the newest award presented by the U of C. The President's Award for Excellence in Student Leadership recognizes five outstanding students. One of these students is a doctoral student in GDER, Christine Johns, who graduates with a PhD in Educational Leadership this June. Learn more

New Courses
Program News
Continuing Professional Development no longer offering quarter courses.
In the 2008/2009 academic year the Graduate Division of Educational Research will not offer Continuing Professional Development (CPD) quarter courses. Students who require a quarter course credit in order to finish their program must contact their Graduate Program Administrator in the GDER office or Dr. Ann Sherman, Acting Associate Dean in GDER. Update on Tuition Payment Option Effective Fall 2008, the University is discontinuing credit cards as a form of payment for tuition and general fees. The University is redirecting dollarscurrently spent on credit card company fees to student financial aid: $500,000 for undergraduates and $250,000 for graduate students. Learn more
Application deadlines
The Graduate Division of Educational Research is currently accepting applications to its on-campus and online programs. The next application deadline is August 15, 2008 for a January 2009 start date. This is for all course-based, on-campus and online programs (MEd, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate). The application deadline for thesis-based degrees (PhD, EdD, MA, and MSc), is February 1, 2009 for a July or September start date. GDER is not accepting applications to the EdD on-campus program for the 2008/2009 calendar year. The course-based programs will also be accepting applications for July or September 2009 start date but not until October 1, 2008. Please refer to your particular program for more information. Notice regarding MEd Exit Procedures in GDER At a meeting of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council on Oct. 24, 2007, a motion was passed to rescind the Master of Education (MEd) Exit Procedure, which has been a required component of the Master of Education program in GDER. If you are a student enrolled in the MEd program (on-campus or online), you have the choice of:
1. being grandfathered, i.e., completing the MEd Exit procedure, or 2. choosing to follow the new policy, which does not require the Exit Procedure for completion of the MEd degree. For further information contact your program GPA. Read more
