Welcome

The Graduate Division of Educational Research (GDER) offers doctoral degrees (PhD, EdD), Master's (MA, MSc, MEd), graduate diplomas, and graduate certificates. We have over 65 faculty members working in a variety of specializations and one of Canada's largest graduate student populations with over 1000 students across Canada and internationally. Our programs, available on campus and online, are administered by GDER and governed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

GDER graduates include teachers, principals, superintendents, professors, consultants, senior leaders in businesses and in postsecondary institutions, corporate trainers, educational consultants, executive directors of research and professional organizations, nursing instructors, instructional designers and conflict mediators. Life as a second year EdD online student

U of C international doctoral student to present paper at women's congress
Israeli resident Miri Renert, a doctoral student in an online distance program offered by the U of C Faculty of Education, will be presenting a paper at the prestigious 10th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women - Women's World 2008, in Madrid Spain. Read more

10 GDER students awarded QEII Graduate Scholarship
Ten students from the U of C, Faculty of Education, Graduate Division of Educational Research (GDER) received the 2008 Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship, worth up to $15,000. Among these are a surfer researching intercultural and environmental education, an online graduate student studying the characteristics and perceptions of other online graduate students, and a Hispanics language scholar researching how ESL programs are marketed. Whispering Signs
U of C Faculty of Education doctoral student Polly Knowlton Cockett is project manager for the Whispering Signs initiative - a system of 34 artistic interpretive signs providing onlookers with a "unique and deeply personal" understanding of the Centennial Nature ground and Whispering Woods Natural Area Park prairie grassland. GDER student wins a national master's thesis award, and presents paper at CIESC conference
Ana-Marija Petrunic, who graduated from the Graduate Division of Educational Research in June 2007 with an MA, was recently awarded the Michel Laferriere Award from the Comparative and International Education Society of Canada (CIESC). Read more

 

Update on Tuition Payment Option
Effective Fall 2008, the University is discontinuing credit cards as a form of payment for tuition and general fees. The University is redirecting dollarscurrently spent on credit card company fees to student financial aid: $500,000 for undergraduates and $250,000 for graduate students. Learn more

Program News


Continuing Professional Development no longer offering quarter courses.
In the 2008/2009 academic year the Graduate Division of Educational Research will not offer Continuing Professional Development (CPD) quarter courses. Students who require a quarter course credit in order to finish their program must contact their Graduate Program Administrator in the GDER office or Dr. Ann Sherman, Acting Associate Dean in GDER. Application deadlines
The Graduate Division of Educational Research is currently accepting applications to its on-campus and online programs. The application deadline is February 1, 2009 for July or September 2009 start date for all thesis-based (PhD, EdD, MA, and MSc) and course-based (MEd, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate), on-campus and online programs. GDER is not accepting applications to the EdD on-campus program for the 2008/2009 calendar year. Please refer to your particular program for more information. GDER launches online EdD in WAL
Beginning Summer 2008, this new thesis-based degree will engage scholars in critical, in-depth investigations into workplace and adult learning. Read more

Notice regarding MEd Exit Procedures in GDER
At a meeting of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council on Oct. 24, 2007, a motion was passed to rescind the Master of Education (MEd) Exit Procedure, which has been a required component of the Master of Education program in GDER. If you are a student enrolled in the MEd program (on-campus or online), you have the choice of:

1) being grandfathered, i.e., completing the MEd Exit procedure, or 2) choosing to follow the new policy, which does not require the Exit Procedure for completion of the MEd degree. For further information contact your program GPA. Read more
